The short answer is NO. You must, however, be able to change the tyre without putting either yourself or anyone else in danger. This means you must be off the road with a safe distance between your car and passing traffic. Remember someone must work in that area. You should also stop in a relatively flat area with good visibility for oncoming traffic. Don’t pull up just over the crest of a hill or on a corner.
Tyres never go flat in the ideal location so it will be necessary to drive until you reach a suitable place. If this happens slow right down and turn on your hazard lights. Your car will probably not handle as expected. Two of the possible effects are the car pulling to one side or the rear being difficult to control. Depending on how far you have to drive to find a suitable site you may damage the flat tyre beyond repair. While this is annoying and probably expensive, it is a far better option than having you or a helper seriously injured by oncoming traffic.
A wheel alignment sets the wheels and tyres flat on the road and pointing in the right direction and is altered by adjusting parts of the steering and suspension systems in the car. The aim is to have the tyres flat on the road and pointing as close as possible to straight ahead when driving. If the tyres are carrying more weight on their outside edge than their inside edge, then the outside edge will wear much faster. If the tyres are pointing either in or out as you travel down the road then they are travelling sideways at least partially. For the average family SUV if a tyre is toeing in or out by 1mm then it is in effect being dragged sideways down the road 500mm for every 1km of travel.
No tyre or wheel can be made perfectly balanced. That is because every part of the tyre or wheel will not weigh exactly the same as the next part of the tyre or wheel. This imbalance causes the tyre to vibrate as it travels down the road and that vibration is felt in the steering wheel of the car. The vibration will often start every time the car gets to a particular speed (say 80kmh). The vibration is not particularly dangerous but is very tiring for the driver especially on long drives. Tyre services will add weights to the wheel at specific locations to balance the wheel and avoid the vibration.
The two cheapest and easiest ways to get long lasting tyres and therefore better value for money, no matter what brand or type of tyre, are to maintain the air pressure at the optimum level, and to keep the wheels aligned. If the wheels are not aligned correctly rubber will be shaved off the tyres with every revolution causing uneven wear. Wheel alignments get out of adjustment over time because of road conditions, changes in the age and effectiveness of your suspension or many other reasons. We recommend that you have a wheel alignment checked and adjusted every 15000km.
Inflating your tyres to the optimum pressure is by far the easiest and cheapest way to make your tyres last. All tyres will lose air over time, about 2-3psi per month and there is no single correct tyre pressure for every vehicle. So how do you know what pressure to run in your tyres when you want to check? Tyre pressures are usually listed in the “Tyres” section of your owner’s manual. This is usually the low end of the acceptable range. Easier still, call into Good Year Auto Care Toowoomba or Dalby every 4-6 weeks and have us inflate your tyres to the optimum pressure. Incidentally, if your tyres are under-inflated not only will they wear faster, but the steering and braking performance will decrease. Finally, under-inflated tyres will bulge more so the car is essentially always driving up hill, severely impacting fuel economy. Try pushing a loaded wheelbarrow or riding a push bike with fully inflated tyres then with the tyre only partially inflated. You will quickly see how underinflation will affect fuel economy.
